Back to work, one step at a time
The final entry in the series is a light one. After a year away from work with long Covid, the author announced that it was time to start working again, and he called the video he shared a video CV, “sort of”. He admitted that the hard work was only beginning.
Why a video introduction can help
A short video lets an applicant show personality in a way a one-page document cannot. It can cover who the person is, what skills they bring and what kind of role they want, in a minute or two. For someone who has been away from the workplace, it is also a chance to present the future in confident terms, not to dwell on the gap in a work history.
Practical points for anyone returning after illness
- Decide how much to say about your health. Many people keep it brief and focus on what they can offer.
- Consider asking about part-time or flexible arrangements from the start.
- Build up gradually, and plan rest into the week.
- Keep supporters nearby, such as friends or family who understand the ups and downs.
These are general ideas, not medical advice, and each person’s situation is different.
